Before publication
Where reporting makes a material adverse claim about an identifiable person or institution, we provide the substance of that claim, enough detail to understand it and a reasonable deadline to respond. We do not ordinarily disclose a confidential source’s identity.
What we include
Relevant denials, explanations, supporting records and corrections are reflected fairly. Silence is described only as no response by the stated deadline; it is not treated as proof.
After publication
A later substantive response may be added as an update when it materially helps readers understand the facts. Knowingly false, threatening or irrelevant material need not be reproduced.
